What is MVP-PEP?

MVP Peer Educators workshop

The MVP components of PEP (Peers Educating Peers) are student-athletes who work with the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Programs (AOD) to educate fellow athletes through programming and mentoring. The student- athletes promote healthy living by providing accurate information through interactive presentations, geared toward fostering dialogue among participants. This is a paid position funded by the MVP grant through the U.S. Department of Education.

What do MVP-PEP members do?

The student-athletes are responsible for presenting social norms data to all athletic teams in an interactive format. They work collaboratively with the office of alcohol and other drug programs to produce and disseminate accurate social norms messages focusing on HWS student-athletes. Each spring the MVP-PEP members receive six to ten hours of training and then during the fall semester facilitate 45 minute interactive presentations to all athletic teams. Each MVP-PEP member is paired with an experienced facilitator so that no individual has to present alone.

The athletes from each team were divided into groups of 4-6 depending on the total size of the group. Each group was given either a question to discuss or a case study to determine the contimuum of risk the athletes’ behavior fell into from low to high. Each small group then reported back to the larger group. For example, they might ask how alcohol impacts athletic performance or be given a scenario and have to determine if the athlete is taking a low or high risk regarding his or her use of alcohol. During the discussion the MVP-PEP members provided accurate information to participants about actual athlete norms regarding alcohol use and clarified any misperceptions the members might have had. After about 20 minutes of discussion, the groups either faced off against each other in a question and answer jeopardy-style game consisting of social norms messages weaved throughout the game or continued discussing additional case studies. For the groups that participated in the jeopardy-style game the team with the most number of points were determined the winners. Each member of the winning group received a $5 certificate at the café. Each member of the second place team received a certificate for a monster chocolate chip cookie.
