GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior Seraphine Hamilton (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.) is one of 12 women who will receive the 2006 Scholar Athlete Award at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) awards banquet on May 8, in Cooperstown, N.Y. In addition to being an exemplary student, she was an All-American defender in soccer and leader on the basketball team.

“Seraphine is the epitome of student-athlete,” William Smith Director of Athletics Deb Steward said. “She represents all of the outstanding aspects of William Smith and William Smith Athletics. She’s a leader in all facets of her life and has been instrumental to the success of the Heron soccer and basketball programs in her four years. We are very proud of all that Seraphine has accomplished as a William Smith student-athlete.”

An Africana studies and English double major, Hamilton is a dean’s list student. During the soccer season, she was named to the Liberty League Soccer All-Academic team and the NSCAA Scholar All-America team. Hamilton also earned a spot on the Liberty League Basketball All-Academic squad.

On the soccer pitch, Hamilton is a two-time All-American. She was named the 2005 Liberty League Player of the Year after directing a William Smith defense that allowed only four goals in 18 games. Hamilton was the 2005 NYSWCAA Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-State selection. A four-year starter, she helped William Smith to a 60-15-9 record and four postseason appearances, including a run to the 2002 NCAA National Semifinals.

Hamilton also started in each of her four seasons on the basketball team. She averaged 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in 27.4 minutes this season, as the Herons won their second consecutive Liberty League Championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hamilton averaged 4.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in 83 career games. She missed half of the 2004-05 season while participating in the Colleges’ study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa.

Over the past five years, seven Herons have been named NYSWCAA Scholar Athletes. In all, 26 William Smith student-athletes have earned this prestigious honor.
