Lifetime athletics achievement award established July 13, 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.--A lifetime athletics achievement award has been established in the name of Joan Hinton Hurd, a 1965 William Smith graduate from Barrington, R.I. The award will be given annually to William Smith graduates for outstanding lifetime athletic achievement.
The award recognizes the exemplary athletic distinction that Hurd held as an undergraduate at William Smith and has continued to uphold throughout her lifetime. A club and regional champion in platform tennis and golf, Hurd still competes at the highest level. Along with her active participation, she has supported youth and collegiate sports programs for more than 35 years. While encouraging many women to participate, she also inspired her children to compete at the highest level.

As a William Smith student, Hurd was active in the International Relations Club, drama and the Athletic Association in tennis, hockey, basketball, badminton and volleyball.

The Heron Society Board of Directors will oversee the Joan Hinton Hurd ’65 Award and will likely present it at the Annual Awards Banquet. To perpetuate the award’s significance, recipients of the award will be invited to return to campus to address students on how sports competition has provided fulfillment, enrichment and balance in their daily lives.
