GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College seniors recently were selected as New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athletes. Field hockey midfielder Sarah Silverio (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.) and soccer defender Jenn Tibbens (Sherburne-Earlville/Sherburne, N.Y.) were two of the nine women honored for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the athletic field.

A first-team STX/NFHCA All-American this past season, Silverio anchored the Heron midfield, finishing the year with a goal and four assists. A second-team All-American in 2003, Silverio is a two-time All-Liberty League selection and was one of two William Smith seniors to help lead the North to victory in the annual North-South Senior All-Star game. During a 67-game career that included three seasons as a starter, Silverio scored 10 goals, including five game-winners, and posted seven assists.

With an 18-3 overall record, the William Smith field hockey team posted its 20th consecutive winning season. The Herons were 7-0 in Liberty League play and won the league tournament championship—the program’s sixth conference crown—and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Ranked fifth in the nation, William Smith’s 15th journey into the NCAA fray reached the semifinal round for the sixth time, before falling to eventual champion Salisbury University 2-1 in overtime.

An NSCAA All-Region honoree, Tibbens was a major part of William Smith’s suffocating defense that allowed just nine goals and posted 12 shutouts in 2004. She also earned All-Liberty League second-team and NYSWCAA All-State recognition. Selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team each of the past two years, Tibbens helped William Smith advance to the national semifinals in 2002 and was a key member of the 2003 squad that captured the ECAC Northeast Championship. Starting all but one game over the past three seasons, she helped the Herons post 36 shutouts, while allowing just 43 goals in 66 matches.

The William Smith soccer team posted its 21st straight winning season and eighth consecutive with at least 13 wins, finishing the year 13-4-3 overall. Earning its 18th consecutive postseason bid, the Herons advanced to the ECAC Upstate Championship semifinals.

NYSWCAA Scholar-Athletes are selected on the basis of the following criteria: minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average; academic and athletic excellence; and nominees should be a source of pride to their institution both on and off the playing arena. Since 2000, six William Smith student-athlete have been named NYSWCAA Scholar-Athletes.
