Amir earns Scholar-Athlete recognition

June 21, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Recent William Smith College graduate Lemore Amir (W. Windsor-Plainsboro/Plainsboro, N.J.) has been named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete. The only senior in the Herons’ varsity boat this season, Amir helped William Smith to a third place finish in the inaugural NCAA Division III Rowing Championship earlier this month in Indianapolis.

The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. The criteria include minimum sophomore academic standing, participating in at least 75 percent of the season’s races in the varsity boat, and a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average through the fall semester of the current season.

Amir graduated in May with a bachelor of arts degree in history.

At the NCAA Championships, the varsity boat qualified for the Grand Final with the fastest 2,000-meter time in the prelims, edging eventual national champion Williams College by five tenths of a second. In the Grand Final, the Herons took second place, three tenths of a second behind the Ephs. Combined with the junior varsity’s fourth place finish in the Petite Final, William Smith finished third in the overall standings.
