GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College seniors were recently named Scholar-Athletes by the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association. Soccer midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) and field hockey forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) were two of the 10 women honored for their outstanding scholarship and athletic ability.

The 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year and a second-team All-American, Falzarano was third on the team in scoring with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. A two-time first-team All-UCAA honoree, she led William Smith to its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals after notching a goal and an assist in the Herons’ 3-0 victory over NYU in the regional finals.

William Smith finished the season at 17-4-3, one win shy of the school’s single season record, advancing all the way to the NCAA Semifinals. The Herons made their record setting 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament winning their third straight New York Region Championship on the way to the team’s sixth appearance in the semifinal round.

The William Smith Senior Athlete of the Year, McKevitt is one of the most prolific goal scorers in school history. William Smith’s leading scorer this season with 14 goals and six assists, she ranks fifth on the Herons’ career goals list (43), 11th in assists (18), and seventh in points (104). McKevitt was named the 2002 UCAA Player of the Year and an NFHCA first-team All-American. She received All-Region and All-UCAA recognition in each of the past three seasons. An exceptional student-athlete, McKevitt was a three-time NFHCA and UCAA All-Academic selection.

The field hockey team finished the season with a 14-7 record, including a second place finish in the UCAA with a 4-2 record. During McKevitt’s four seasons as a Heron, the field hockey team reached the postseason four times, winning the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championship in 1999 and the 2000 NCAA Championship.

NYSWCAA Scholar-Athletes are selected on the basis of the following criteria: minimum 3.0 grade point average; academic and athletic excellence; and nominees should be a source of pride to their institution both on and off the playing arena. Since 2000, six William Smith student-athlete have been named NYSWCAA Scholar-Athletes.
