April 30, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.-–The Hobart College Athletics Department and the Statesmen Athletic Association

honored the College’s top student-athletes last night at the 37th annual Block H Awards Dinner. Senior Peter H. Cooke (Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville, N.Y.) was named the Francis L. “Babe” Kraus ’24 Memorial Award winner, presented to the Hobart senior athlete of the year.

A two-sport athlete, Cooke is a two-time captain of the Hobart soccer team and a four-year letterwinner for the lacrosse team. One of the top defenders in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association, he scored six goals and assisted on five others during his soccer career, earning second-team All-UCAA honors in 2001. An attackman on the Division I lacrosse team, Cooke has recorded five goals and three assists during his career. This evening he also earned the soccer team’s Stephen R. Murphy ’77 Memorial Award and the lacrosse team’s Crook Family Award.

A charter member of the Hobart Athletic Hall of Fame, the Kraus Award is given in memory of “Babe” Kraus ’24, lacrosse All-American, captain of the Hobart football team, coach of Hobart lacrosse from 1925-66, and director of athletics from 1932-63.

Senior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony’s/Seaford, N.Y.) garnered the William C. Stiles Memorial Award. A true gentleman, Bill Stiles served Hobart College as coach, professor, and athletic director until his death in 1979. Presented annually to the Hobart College senior whose leadership, determination, and character most reflect the traits and value of Bill Stiles.

Schiele is a four-year letterwinner for the Hobart basketball team. He holds the school free throw percentage records for a single season (.922) and a career (.855). He led the team in steals in each of the past two season, and assists this past season. Schiele averaged a career-high 8.8 points per game during the 2000-01 season, the same year Hobart won the UCAA Championship and earned the program’s first berth in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Senior Brennan Coon (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) received The Coach Bill Maxwell Memorial Award. The manager for the lacrosse and a student athletic trainer, he is also a member of the Hobartones, an a cappella group, the Druid Society, Hobart’s senior honor society, and Chimera, Hobart’s junior honor society.

During his tenure as head coach of football at Hobart College (1990-94), Bill Maxwell earned the respect and affection of his players, their families, Hobart alumni, the staff and faculty of the Colleges. Players and colleagues alike came to know and appreciate Coach Maxwell for his “tough love.” Presented for the first time in 2001, The Maxwell Award will be presented periodically to a student, alumnus, friend, parent, staff, or faculty member whose contributions to Hobart College reflect the values of our friend and mentor, Coach Bill Maxwell. While sustaining the memory and legacy of Bill Maxwell, the award presents Hobart College with a meaningful manner in which to recognize worthy individuals whose sportsmanship, courage, teamwork, and or service to our campus community are truly outstanding and may be above and beyond the call of duty.

The Abe Solomon Memorial Rookie Award winner was first-year Adam Lavelle (Bridgton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.). The goalie set Hobart records for saves in a season (795) and wins in a season (10), while leading the Statesmen to their best record since 1992-93. He boasted an .891 save percentage and a 4.17 goals against average, including an .895 save percentage and a 3.75 GAA in league play. Lavelle recorded a season-high 48 saves in just his second collegiate game against ECAC West Champion RIT. This evening he also earned the Boswell Award (Hockey MVP) and the Hockey Rookie Award.

The Abe Solomon Award is presented annually to the Hobart athlete competing in his first season of varsity intercollegiate athletics and whose performance and contributions to his team warrant the recognition of “Rookie-of-the-Year.”

The Joseph N. Abraham Memorial Training Award was presented to senior offensive lineman Kevin Haggerty (St. Francis/West Seneca, N.Y.) for perseverance through injury. A three-year letterwinner, he missed more than half of the 1999 season due to injury, but returned the following season to help lead the Statesmen to their first NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearance.

The award honors the life of Joseph N. Abraham, professor, athletic trainer, and athletics director from 1946 through 1981. He was inducted into the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988.

Senior Amber M. Kling (West Seneca, N.Y.) received the Joseph N. Abraham Prize, presented to a student in recognition of his or her outstanding service to the athletics programs of Hobart College. Kling served as a student athletic trainer for four years.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are coordinate, private, liberal arts institutions, located in Geneva, N.Y. Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women share faculty, facilities, and curriculum, but maintain separate dean’s offices, athletics programs, student governments, and traditions.
