George Dornberger George Dornberger

Head Coach William Smith Golf

In August 2007, William Smith Director of Athletics Deb Steward named George Dornberger the head coach of the Heron golf team. He succeeds interim head coach Michelle Walsh, who resigned in July to accept a position at Lawrence University.

“George brings a wealth of knowledge to our golf team and will help further develop this young program,” Steward said. “His insight and experience make him a great addition to our outstanding coaching staff.”

While this will be Dornberger’s first season as a collegiate head coach, he has more than 17 years of experience in the golf industry, including 14 years as a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Association. Dornberger was the head golf professional at Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan for 10 years. At Lakeside, he developed a junior golf program for the Penn Yan community. Dornberger also served a stint as the dining room and clubhouse manager at Lakeside.

Previously, Dornberger was a teaching professional at Elmridge Golf Club in Pawcatuck, Conn., and was an assistant professional at Atlantis Golf Club in Atlantis, Fla.

Dornberger earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Appalachian State University.

Dornberger will welcome back a roster that includes four returning veterans and five first-year players. The Herons will open their fourth varsity season on Sept. 8 in the two-day St. Lawrence Tournament.
