Hobart falls to Worcester State in V Foundation Classic

January 4, 2005

SALEM, Va.—The Hobart basketball team lost to Worcester State College 75-63 in the consolation game of the 12th Annual V Foundation Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. Junior guard Adam Frederic (Holy Cross/Flushing, N.Y.) was named to the All-Classic Team after scoring 28 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in two games.

The first half was a back and forth affair that featured more turnovers (28 combined) than made field goals (23). The first 20 minutes featured five lead changes and saw the score tied on five other occasions. The Statesmen (3-5) trailed by as many as nine, but a 10-0 run got Hobart the lead with 2:21 remaining. A 7-3 Worcester State (5-4) run to end the half, gave the Lancers a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Statesmen struggled to get shots to fall in the second half, connecting on just 12 of 39, while Worcester State continued to fire at a 50 percent clip. Hobart was within three, 49-46, with 8:55 remaining, but the Lancers went on a 14-5 run that put them in charge.

The Statesmen made one last push, closing within six on a three-pointer by junior guard Joe Virgilio (Wheatley/East Williston, N.Y.) with 38 seconds remaining. Worcester State made all eight of its free throws down the stretch to close out the contest.

Frederic was Hobart’s leading scorer for the second night in a row. He scored 13 points to go with five rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Manning (Center Moriches/Mastic, N.Y.) was the only other Statesmen in double digits with 11 points.

Hobart returns to action at 7 p.m., on Jan. 11. The Statesmen will host Hamilton College in the first Liberty League match up of the season for both squads.
