GENEVA, N.Y.–Hobart Basketball Head Coach Rich Roche ’87 recently announced that senior guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.), senior guard Joe Virgilio (Wheatley, East Williston, N.Y.), and junior guard Mike Manning (Center Moriches/Mastic, N.Y.) will serve as team captains during the 2005-06 season.

“When you return as much experience and leadership as we will next season, it really says a lot about these three young men to be voted captains by their teammates,” Roche said. “Colby, Joe, and Mike bring exceptional skills to the basketball court, but more importantly, they are natural leaders, always displaying the proper attitude on the court, in the locker room, and in the classroom.”

Feane will return to his point guard position where he has started for Hobart the past three seasons. In 2004-05, he was an NABC All-East second-team, ECAC Upstate second-team, and All-Liberty League first-team selection and led the Statesmen in scoring (16.4 ppg), assists (3.04 apg), steals (2.48/g), three-point field goal percentage (.491), and three-pointers made (2.24/g). Feane led the Liberty League in three-point shooting and steals, ranking 36th in the nation in the latter category. A standout in two sports, he also will serve as a captain and is expected to start at wide receiver for Hobart’s football team, three-time defending Liberty League Champions.

In his first season with the Statesmen, Virgilio saw action in all 27 games, including 19 starts. The transfer from Bryant University led the team in free throw percentage (.860) and was second in three-point field goal percentage (.407) and three-pointers made (1.78/g). Virgilio scored a season-high 27 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including seven trifectas, against St. Lawrence on Feb. 12. He has hit at least one three-pointer in 15 consecutive games, nine shy of the Hobart record set by Feane during the 2004-05 season.

Starting all but one game for the Statesmen in 2004-05, Manning finished second on the team in steals (1.78/g), third in scoring (11.7 ppg), and fourth in rebounding (4.1 rpg). He scored a season-high 23 points on Dec. 18, 2004 at Division I Colgate. Manning posted a double-double against Union on Jan. 22, scoring 17 points and collecting 10 rebounds.

Hobart is coming off a 16-11 season, the third highest win total in the program’s 95-season history. The Statesmen won the regular season Liberty League crown, earned an ECAC Upstate Tournament bid, and won the program’s first postseason game, defeating Plattsburgh 88-74 in the quarterfinal round. The 2005-06 Hobart basketball team will welcome back four starters and 11 letterwinners.
