Roche announces captains for 2004-05 basketball season

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart Basketball Head Coach Rich Roche ’87 recently announced that senior guard Eric Jacks (St. Sebastian’s/Dorchester, Mass.), senior guard Zack Stelzner (Berkeley Carroll/Brooklyn, N.Y.), and junior guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.) will serve as team captains during the 2004-05 season.

Jacks and Stelzner have provided quality minutes off the bench for the Statesmen over the past three seasons and will likely split time at shooting guard this year. Jacks played in all 25 games last season, including three starts. He averaged 2.1 ppg and 1.8 rpg, while recording a career-high 56 assists and 15 steals.

“Eric has worked so hard and improved so much since his arrival at Hobart,” Roche said. “He’s a tough competitor and one of our strongest players in the weight room. The younger players can learn a lot from him about having the proper work ethic.”

Stelzner saw action in 21 games in 2003-04, including 13 starts. He averaged 2.9 ppg and 1.4 rpg, while posting a career-high 34 assists and 27 steals.

“Zack is very athletic, very strong, and one of our best defenders,” Roche said. “And he is one of the most genuinely likeable people that I have ever met. His teammates think the world of him.”

Feane will return to his point guard position where he has started for Hobart in each of the past two seasons. In 2003-04, he led Hobart in assists (91) and free throw percentage (.804) and tied for the team lead in steals (30), while averaging 9.6 ppg and 3.0 rpg.

“Colby is the whole package,” Roche said. “He’s a leader by nature both on and off the basketball court. Not only is he one of our best players, he’s one of our best students.”

The Statesmen are looking to rebound from last season’s 9-16 mark. Hobart returns six players with starting experience and has its sights set on finishing in the top-four in the recently renamed Liberty League (formerly the UCAA). The top-four teams in the regular season standings will compete in a postseason tournament for the league championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
