March 3 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team advanced to the ECAC Upstate Tournament Semifinal round with an 88-74 victory over Plattsburgh State in Bristol Gym yesterday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Statesmen will travel to play top-seeded Oswego State on March 4, at 8 p.m. The winner advances to the title game on March 5, at 1 p.m.
Ticket prices for the ECAC games are $4 for adults and $1 for students.
Coming off its first postseason victory in four appearances, Hobart (16-10) is led by junior guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.). Feane leads the Statesmen in scoring (16.7 ppg), assists (3.13 apg), and steals (2.54 spg). Shooting 50 percent from behind the arc, he pushed his record-setting streak of at least one three pointer made to 24 games against the Cardinals.
Senior forward Joe Flacke (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) is second in scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounds (7.0), while sophomore Mike Mastro (Jericho/Westbury, N.Y.) leads Hobart on the boards with 7.1 caroms per game.
The Lakers (23-9) advanced to the semifinal round after cruising to a 70-51 victory over No. 8 Ithaca. Senior forward Dave Ponza (Solvay/Solvay, N.Y.) leads Oswego in scoring (13.7 ppg) and is third in rebounding (5.3 rpg). Sophomore guard Nick Perioli (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) leads the team in assists (3.8 apg) and steals (1.79 spg) and is chipping in 13.2 points per game.
Hitting seven three pointers against the Cardinals, six of which came in the first half, the Statesmen need just one more to surpass the 1999-00 squad’s record of 178 threes in a season.
The game will be broadcast by WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca). Those outside the listening area can tune in to streaming audio online at: www.publicbroadcasting.net/weos/ppr/weos.asx.
