Corbett carries Hobart to victory, becomes 1st Statesman to 1,000 boards

Joe Corbett '03

January 14, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior forward Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) carried the Statesmen to victory tonight over visiting Hilbert College, 92-77, and in the process became the first Hobart player to record 1,000 career rebounds. Corbett finished with a career and game-high 34 points, hitting 15-of-18 shots from the floor, while collecting a season and game-high 16 rebounds to raise his career total to 1,005.

With the exception of Corbett, the Statesmen (2-7) struggled in the first half, shooting just 39.4 percent (13-33) and making 12 turnovers, while the Hawks (1-10) torched the Bristol Gym nets. Hilbert connected on 56.3 percent of its shots (18-32) in the opening 20 minutes to take a 43-36 lead into the locker room. It could have been worse if not for Corbett’s 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting.

After the break, and an inspiring halftime speech by Head Coach Rich Roche, Hobart completely turned the tables. The Statesmen knocked down 79.2 percent of their shots (19-24), while limiting the Hawks to just 35.1 percent (13-37).

Two minutes into the final frame, Hobart trailed by six following a lay up by junior Sean Kenney (Tonawanda/Tonawanda, N.Y.), who finished with 14 points. It was six minutes, 35 seconds before the Hawks sank another field goal.

The Statesmen scored the game’s next 20 points, including six from Corbett and five from first-year guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.). Feane finished with 10 points and five assists.

Hilbert managed to trim the Hobart lead to nine with 11:08 remaining, but a Corbett lay up pushed the lead back into double digits for good.

All five Hobart starters reached double digits in points. Senior guard Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) had 11 points and seven assists, junior guard Brad Strait (Fort Plain/Fort Plain, N.Y.) added 12, while senior forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points and three blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Adam Gioia (West Seneca West/West Seneca, N.Y.) led Hilbert with 22 points.

Hobart returns to action on Jan. 17, when it hosts St. Lawrence. Tip off in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
