Corbett named ECAC Upstate All-Star

Joe Corbett '03

March 15, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. –Hobart College junior basketball player Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) was named to the ECAC Division III Upstate All-Star first-team. The center is also a member of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association and D3.Hoops.com All-East Region first-teams, as well as a Rochester Area College Athletics honorable mention.

The 2001 ECAC Division III Upstate and UCAA Player of the Year and 2000 UCAA Rookie of the Year, Corbett led the team in scoring (18.5 ppg), rebounding (12.2 rpg), and shooting percentage (55.7) this season. His rebounding average led the UCAA and ranks fourth in Division III as of Feb. 25. A five-time UCAA Forward of the Week this year, he posted 17 double-doubles to raise his career total to 49.

On Jan. 12, Corbett became just the 17th Statesman to record his 1,000th career point and he currently ranks ninth on Hobart’s all-time list with 1,239 points. The center is within striking distance of both the career scoring and rebounding records. With 425 points—he’s averaged 486.5 per season over the past two years—he will eclipse career scoring leader Mike Masino ’88, and with 50 rebounds he will pass the benchmark established by Carmen Genovese ’70 (967). Corbett was one of 10 finalists for the 2002 Jostens Trophy, presented to the Division III Basketball Player of the Year.

Hobart finished the season with a 12-13 record, including a 7-7 mark in UCAA play. Three Statesmen scored their 1,000th career point during a season for the first time in the program’s history. Corbett, junior forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) and senior guard Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) each reached the milestone.
