Corbett's 1,000th proves bittersweet

January 12, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.--Hobart College junior center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) became just the 17th Statesman to record 1,000 career points, but the milestone proved bittersweet, as Hobart lost to visiting Rensselaer, 78-69. Corbett led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor, and posted his 40th career double-double with a game-high 18 rebounds.

The teams battled through a nip-and-tuck first half, with neither side leading by more than six points. The Red Hawks (5-6, 1-1 in UCAA) held a five-point advantage at the break, and scored the first five points of the second half to take a 37-27 lead with 17:35 remaining.

Hobart (6-7, 1-1) battled back with a run of its own, outscoring Rensselaer 12-2 over the next four minutes. The highlight of the Statesmen's streak was Corbett's 1,000th. With 15:57 on the scoreboard, he drained the front end of a two-shot foul to raise his career total to exactly 1,000. He currently boasts 1,013 career points.

Hobart evened the contest at the 13:39 mark, but a 6-0 spurt by the Red Hawks put them back in front for good. The Statesmen were able to close to within seven with 31 seconds remaining, but could get no closer, as Rensselaer hit 5-of-7 free throw attempts in the final minute to ice the contest.

Senior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) was the only other Statesman in double digits with 13 points.

Junior guard Kevin Moore (Redemption Christian Academy/San Antonio, Texas) led the Red Hawks with 20 points, while sophomore forward Jared Hite (Wayland/Dorchester, Mass.) added 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Hobart returns to action on Jan. 18, when it travels to league rival Skidmore College for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
