Gambino, Herron earn ECAC recognition

Nov 29, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Eastern College Athletic Association named two Hobart College basketball players to the ECAC Upstate Division III Weekly Honor Roll. The standout play of senior Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) and junior Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) helped the Statesmen to a 1-1 week.

In Hobart's season opening 81-68 victory over SUNY-Fredonia in the first round of the Kings Point Tip-Off Invitational Tournament, Gambino scored a game-high 23 points, including a 5-of-12 effort from behind the arc. In the championship game against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the senior netted 16 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career. Gambino also grabbed six rebounds and recorded six assists in the Statesmen's 81-72 loss to the Mariners. He was also named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's Co-Guard of the Week.

Herron scored 19 points and hauled in nine rebounds in Hobart's win over the Blue Devils. Against the Mariners, the forward posted his first double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 29 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Herron's average of 24.0 points per game leads the team and is third in the UCAA. The junior was also named the UCAA's Forward of the Week.

The Statesmen (1-2) open up the home portion of their 2001-02 campaign tonight, when they host Ithaca College (2-0) at 7 p.m.
