Gambino, Herron named Players of the Week

nov 26, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–Two Hobart College basketball players were recognized by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association for their play during a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. Senior Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) was named the UCAA Co-Guard of the Week, while junior Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) was named the league's Forward of the Week.

In Hobart's season opening 81-68 victory over SUNY-Fredonia in the first round of the Kings Point Tip-Off Invitational Tournament, Gambino scored a game-high 23 points, including a 5-of-12 effort from behind the arc. In the championship game against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the senior netted 16 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career. Gambino also grabbed six rebounds and recorded six assists in the Statesmen's 81-72 loss to the Mariners.

Herron scored 19 points and hauled in nine rebounds in Hobart's win over the Blue Devils. Against the Mariners, the forward posted his first double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 29 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Herron's average of 24.0 points per game leads the team and is third in the UCAA.

The Statesmen (1-1) travel to the University of Rochester (5-0) on Nov. 27, for a 7 p.m., contest. Last season, Hobart defeated the Yellowjackets 71-69 in Geneva.
