GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College basketball team, led by junior forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.), gave its seniors a send off to remember running past Skidmore College, 96-65. Herron led the offensive explosion with a career-high matching 30 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. It was a tale of two halves in Bristol Gym this afternoon, as the Thoroughbreds (5-15, 0-9 in UCAA) shot 50 percent from the floor and hung with the Statesmen (10-11, 5-5) during the openging 20 minutes. Skidmore held its final lead of the contest, 20-17, at the 9:36 mark. Hobart answered with a 7-0 run to climb back in front for good and used another 7-0 burst to head into the locker room up, 43-35. The teams traded baskets out of the gate in the second half, but the Statesmen scored 12 unanswered to build a commanding 20 points lead with 16 minutes still remaining. Midway through the final frame, Herron helped put the game out of reach with a pair of dunks just two minutes apart. The first started on the defensive end of the floor. Herron blocked a jumper by JP Corry and collected the rebound. In the offensive zone, Herron took a great pass from classmate Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) and threw down a two-handed jam to give Hobart a 74-48 lead. Two minutes later, it was a near instant replay, as Corbett fed Herron for another two-handed slam and an 83-51 lead. Herron, who needs just 26 points to become the third Statesmen this season, and 18th overall, to record 1,000 career points, knocked down 14 of the 21 shots he took from the floor, while also handing out four assists. Meanwhile, Corbett also turned in an exceptional effort, hitting 11-of-17 and finishing with 24 points including 20 after the break and 15 rebounds. Senior Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) scoring 12 points and dishing out a game-high six assists. Senior Brian Schiele (St. Anthonys/Seaford, N.Y.) and junior Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) also registered six helpers. In all, the Statesmen played some of their most unselfish basketball of the season, recording a season-high 30 assists, just five shy of the school record, while committing a season-low seven turnovers. Hobart also controlled the boards, grabbing 55 caroms to Skidmores 30. Junior Lucas Murray (Oneonta/Oneonta, N.Y.) led the Thoroughbreds with 12 points, all in the first half. Hobart closes the regular season with four games on the road, starting at 8 p.m., on Feb. 8, at Rensselaer. |
