Statesmen open UCAA with win over Saints

January, 17, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team opened its Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association schedule this evening with a 79-66 victory over visiting St. Lawrence University. Junior guard Brad Strait (Fort Plain/Fort Plain, N.Y.) posted a game-high 19 points hitting five of his eight shots behind the arc, while first-year guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.) added another 18 on 8-13 (.615) shooting.

In an opening session that featured six lead changes in and two ties in 15 minutes, Hobart (3-7, 1-0 UCAA) played tenacious defense forcing the Saints to turn the ball over 13 times. Down by four midway through the first half the Statesmen took the lead for good after senior guard Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) hit a three-point basket and was fouled for a rare four-point play.

Hobart would carry that momentum for the remaining five minutes of the half, taking a 38-32 lead into the locker room despite St. Lawrence (6-4, 0-1 UCAA) shooting an impressive 60 percent (12-20 from the field.

After the break, the Saints would cut the lead to three, 43-40, but the Statesmen answered with a 16-7 run keyed by senior forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) to push the lead back to 12 with 11:46 remaining. He would finish the night with 12 points and eight boards.

Hobart dominated the boards, outrebounding St. Lawrence 36-24, including 16-6 on the offensive glass. Senior forward Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) had another solid night posting 17 points, 14 rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes of action.

The Statesmen are back in action tomorrow, Jan. 18, when Clarkson visits Bristol Gym. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
