GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team had four players score in double digits, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced scoring of Skidmore as the Thoroughbreds claimed a 70-63 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association victory in Bristol Gym tonight. Skidmore sophomore forward Cortlandt Toczylowski (Glastonbury/South Glastonbury, Conn.) led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 10-of-17 from the floor.

The Thoroughbreds (8-5, 1-3 UCAA) led by as many as 12 in the opening frame, but the Statesmen (5-8, 1-2 UCAA) closed the half on a 10-2 run to trim their deficit to four, 35-31. First-year forward Billy Clarke (St. Mary’s/Manhasset, N.Y.) keyed the scoring burst with all eight of his points, sinking back-to-back three-pointers and two of three free throws with no time remaining in the half.

Hobart carried its momentum into the second half, netting the first five points of the stanza to take their only lead of the evening, 36-35, on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.). Feane finished with 12 points and four assists.

Skidmore responded to the threat with an 8-2 run to reclaim the lead for good. The Statesmen closed to within three with 2:19 remaining on a layup by junior forward Joe Flacke (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.), but the Thoroughbreds scored six of the games final eight points to seal the victory.

Flacke paced the Hobart offense with 16 points. Sophomore forward Tim Apuzzo (Greely/Cumberland, Maine) added a double double for the Statesmen with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds before fouling out with three minutes remaining. Senior guard Brad Strait (Fort Plain/Fort Plain, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and five assists.

The win is the first for Skidmore over Hobart since Dec. 11, 1998 (80-76), and the first in Bristol Gym since Dec. 8, 1995 (83-76).

Hobart returns to action at 4 p.m., on Jan. 24, when Union visits Bristol Gym. The Dutchmen (12-3, 2-2 UCAA) lost 74-57 at Hamilton this evening.
