Statesmen rout Brewers 98-73 on senior day

February 22, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—All five starters for Hobart College notched double figures as the Statesmen eased past visiting Vassar College 98-73 in UCAA basketball action this afternoon. Playing in their final game as Statesmen, Hobart honored its five seniors prior to tipoff with the Brewers.

Hobart (10-15, 7-7 in UCAA) took a 2-0 lead off a layup by Brad Strait (Fort Plain/Fort Plain, N.Y.) and never looked back on its way to a 25-point victory. The Statesmen would increase their lead to 16 midway through the half holding the Brewers to just seven points in the opening 11 minutes with suffocating defense. Vassar (6-19, 1-13 in UCAA) battled back on the strength of a 24-10 run to cut the lead to two at the 2:54 mark. Coming out of a timeout the Statesmen scored the next two baskets to take 37-34 lead at halftime.

After an inspiring halftime speech from Head Coach Rich Roche Hobart opened the second session with a 13-0 run keyed by senior Davidek Herron’s (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) six points to grab a 16-point edge. The Brewers would cut the lead to 13 but could not get any closer as Hobart ran away with the game.

The Statesmen outrebounded Vassar 45-29, while shooting a solid 49.3 percent from the floor (34-69). Senior Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) led the way with a game-high 26 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Corbett finishes his career at Hobart as both the all-time leading scorer with 1,701 points and all-time leading rebounder with 1,249 boards.

Strait followed with 19 points on 6-12 shooting, including 3-6 from behind the arc. Herron and fellow senior Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville) had a double-digit afternoon dropping in 15 and 11 points, respectively. Fellow classmate Rocco Walsh (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, N.Y.) closed out his career, chipping in a career-high 10 points.

Brian Snodgrass (Holmdel/Holmdel, N.J.) paced Vassar with 24 points, while Jud Winton (University/San Francisco, Calif.) went for 17 on the afternoon.
