Statesmen cagers fall to Dutchmen, 78-62

February 7, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Union College improved to 6-2 in Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association basketball action this evening with a 78-62 win over Hobart College in Bristol Gym. Union senior Phil Henry (Chaminade/Flushing, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 23 points on 11 of 16 shooting.

The Statesmen (7-11, 4-4 UCAA) and Dutchmen traded runs throughout the first half. Just two minutes into the game Union went on an 11-2 run gaining a seven point edge. Hobart responded with an 11-2 run of its own to take a 17-15 lead midway through the opening stanza. The Statesmen however could not hang on as the Dutchmen (11-7) battled back with a 17-5 streak, putting them ahead for good. Hobart would close the gap to just one going into the locker room, but were unable to prevail in the second period.

Coming out of the break the Dutchmen put the game away for good, taking a 44-33 lead three minutes into the second half. Hobart would cut the lead to five, but could not get any closer as Union pulled away at the end. For the game the Dutchmen shot 60 percent from the floor, including 16 of 22 (72.7%) in the second half.

Union sophomore Devon Bruce (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) followed Henry with 19 points, while first-year Brian Scordato (Horace Greeley/Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) chipped in 16 points.

Hobart senior Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Statesmen with a 21 points and 12 boards performance. Junior Brad Strait (Fort Plain/Fort Plain, N.Y.) added 12 points, while first-year Tim Apuzzo (Greely/Cumberland, Maine) notched a career-high 10 points.

The Statesmen are back in action tomorrow when Skidmore College visits Bristol Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
