Tigers shutdown Statesmen, 90-76
Dec 1, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The Rochester Institute of Technology basketball team shot 64.3 percent from the floor to hand Hobart College its first regular season loss in Bristol Gymnasium in two seasons. Statesmen senior guard Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) and junior center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) topped the scoring list with 23 and 22 points, respectively. The Tigers and Statesmen traded leads for the first nine minutes of the game. At the 10:57 mark, senior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to give Hobart a 23-20 advantage, their biggest of the day. A free throw from junior guard Daniel Cerro (Union Springs/Union Springs, N.Y.) with 9:15 remaining in the half gave RIT a 26-25 lead and the Tigers never trailed again. RIT closed the first half on a 10-5 run, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior guard Brandon Redmond (Palmyra-Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon, N.Y.), to open up a 51-42 halftime lead. The Statesmen started the second half on a 10-2 run capped by a Gambino three-pointer to close the gap to 55-52 at the 15:38 mark, but never got any closer. A layup from junior forward Tim Book (Hutch Tech/Buffalo, N.Y.) extended the Tiger lead to 79-66 and Hobart never got with in 11 points again as RIT cruised to the 90-76 victory. Redmond led the Tigers (2-0) with 18 points and Cerro finished with 14 points. McGrath and first-year center Jesse Foote (Spencer-Van Ettan/Lockwood, N.Y.) scored 12 and 11, respectively. Junior forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) notched a double-double for Hobart with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) also reached double-digits with 10 points. With his 23-point effort, Gambino jumped from 16th to 12th on Hobart's all-time scoring list with 1,046 points. RIT dominated the boards outrebounding the Statesmen 34-19. Hobart begins a six-game road trip at Cazenovia College on Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. Last season, the Statesmen (2-3) downed the Wildcats 88-72 in Geneva. |
