Statesmen, Herons to open UCAA hoops slate

January 16, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart and William Smith Colleges' basketball teams will open their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association slate on Jan. 17, when they play host to the cagers from St. Lawrence University. The Statesmen will tip off the action at 6 p.m., with the Herons following at 8 p.m.

Hobart has struggled through its first nine games, posting a 2-7 record against a schedule that includes five ranked opponents and Division I Colgate. The Statesmen split with the Saints last season, with the home team tasting victory in the home-and-home series.

Senior Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) leads Hobart in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.4 points and 12.4 rebound per game.

William Smith heads into conference play with a 4-4 record, including Head Coach Glenn Begly's 300th career win on Jan. 4. The Herons split the regular season series with the Saints in 2001-02, but St. Lawrence captured the 2002 UCAA Tournament title with a 70-46 win over William Smith.

Senior Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) leads the Herons in scoring and rebounding with 19.8 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Hobart and William Smith will host Clarkson University in another UCAA double header on Jan. 18. The Statesmen tip off at 2 p.m., with the Herons to start at 4 p.m.
