BOSTON—The Hobart Crew varsity eight tuned in another strong performance this weekend finishing ninth of 45 boats in the Collegiate Division of the 40th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Racing in cold and windy conditions, the Statesmen covered the shortened course in 11:54.74. Trinity College earned top honors with a time of 11:29.38, 14 seconds faster than the runner-up.
The crew of junior Timothy Faxon (Salisbury School/Pelham, Mass.), sophomores Joseph Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), Nathan Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), and Robert Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), and first-years Travis Deane (Tabor Academy/Tiverton, R.I.), Cary Wasserman (Salisbury School/New York, N.Y.), and Richard Klein (Staples/Weston, Conn.) outraced 36 other boats and were just one of two Division III squads in the top-10.
“I was really proud of how they performed this weekend,” said Head Coach Mike Guerrieri. “With such a young crew competing at this level of competition, they kept their poise, rowed well and were able to finish within five percent of the winning time which guarantees the program an entry in next year’s regatta.”
The Head of the Charles is the world’s largest 2 day rowing event. Held in Boston Massachusetts, the regatta hosts crews from all over the world. The Statesmen varsity eight won the Collegiate Division in 2002 and still holds the three-mile course record.
Hobart closes out its fall season on Oct. 30, at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y. The Statesmen will send their varsity eight, varsity four, and two novice eights to compete in the regatta.
