Hobart crew sweep UMass

March 26, 2005

ITHACA, N.Y.--The Hobart crew swept the University of Massachusetts in three races to open the spring portion of its schedule. Hobart's varsity eight of senior Michael Hoepp, juniors Gardner Loring, John Michael Chadonic, Daniel Gilbert, and Gavin Johnstone Butcher, and sophomores Joseph Jameson, Rob Reinheimer, Paul Wasmund, and Mike Grenier defeated the Minutemen by 11 seconds, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:05.

The Statesmen's novice eight manned by first-years James Spalt, Richard Klein, Trippe Duke, Alex Tye, Campbell Woods, Timothy Starr, Steve Reisman, Vince Defabo, and Drew Meunier, topped UMass by 20 second, covering the course in 6:25.

Hobart's second varsity eight also bested the Minutemen. The crew of Senior Matthew Monbouquette, junior Timothy Faxon, sophomores Jared Desrochers, Mike Guglielmo, Alex Caruthers, Chip Armstrong, and Nathan Kress, and first-years Kevin Corbett and Cary Wasserman led by 21 seconds (6:21 to 6:42) as they crossed the finish line.

“The Hobart eights performed well today,” Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said. “I asked them to set a standard to improve upon. I feel like they did that today. Making continued improvement from this point will be important considering our next two opponents [Marist and Colgate] will be Division I varsity programs.”

The Hobart crew is back in action on April 2. The Statesmen will host their lone home event at the Hellstrom Boathouse when Ithaca and Marist colleges visit Geneva. Racing is schedule to begin at 10 a.m.
