Hobart varsity 8 earn Liberty League Award
April 25 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College varsity eight was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week after defeating three conference opponents at Union over the weekend after the Liberty League Championships were cancelled. This is the Statesmen crew team’s third weekly honor of the season after the varsity four captured the award twice earlier in the year.
With the opportunity to capture its first league title at the second annual Liberty League Championships gone due to dangerous rowing conditions on St. Lawrence’s home course, Hobart, Skidmore, Union, and Vassar packed up and traveled to Schenectady for a day of racing.
On Union’s home course the Statesmen’s varsity eight of Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.), Mike Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), Matt Monbouquette (Moses Brown/Burlington, R.I.), Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), JM Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), and Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.) outraced all three teams, covering the 1800-meter course in 5:47. The next closest competitor was Hobart’s second varsity eight with a time of 5:55.
The Statesmen return to the water on April 30, at the New York State Championships at Whitney Point.
