Hobart crew takes home silver and 2 bronze at New York State Championships
May 2 , 2005
WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team came away from the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships this weekend medaling in every event they entered. The Statesmen captured silver in the varsity four category, bronze in the varsity eight and the novice eight events. The race was consolidated into a one day after concerns about impending bad weather prompted race officials and coaches to decide to run heats and finals in the same day.
In the premier event of the day, the Statesmen varsity eight fought off a late charge by Colgate to earn third place with a time of 6:06.4. Hobart’s line-up of seniors Michael Hoepp and Matthew Monbouquette, juniors Gardner Loring, JM Chadonic, Gavin Johnstone-Butcher, and Daniel Gilbert, and sophomores Joseph Jameson, Robert Reinheimer and Mike Grenier put together an impressive race to secure the bronze medal. The Statesmen finished behind a strong Marist crew (6:01.8) and missed silver by just 0.9 seconds to Army (6:05.5). They finished ahead of eight other crews including Colgate, a team that had beaten Hobart earlier this season.

“The varsity men’s eight really rose to the occasion for their final race today,” Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said. “I was very impressed by the way they handled themselves on the course. Their performance in this race is an important stepping stone in preparation for the competition to come at the ECAC Championship.”
Hobart captured the silver in the varsity four competition trailing the University of Rochester (7:10) by just 2.3 seconds in Saturday's grand final. The boat of junior Tim Faxon, sophomores Paul Wasmund, Nate Kress and Alex Caruthers, and first-year James Spalt outraced 10 other crews with a time of 7:12.3 and to earn a spot in the ECAC National Invitational Regatta this coming weekend.
“A top 2 in the State result was needed for the varsity four to advance to more post season racing at the ECACs,”Guerrieri said. “The varsity four rowed well this weekend and did what they had to do to be selected. I look forward to watching them compete on a national stage this coming weekend”.
The novice eight also turned in a bronze medal performance. The boat of first years included Cary Wasserman, Richard Klein, Drew Meunier, Alex Tye, Campbell Woods, Kevin Corbett, Mark Vogelgesang, Vincent Defabo, and Trippe Duke. Their third place finish helped them secure their entry at the ECAC Regatta.
“The Novice eight was able to bounce back from a shaky first race and put in a solid performance in their final," Guerrieri said. "They were able to defeat a strong boat from Army who had clocked a much faster time than they had in the heats.”
Hobart will return to action on May 7-8, in Worcester, Mass. at the ECAC National Invitational Regatta.
