Statesmen sweep Liberty League crew awards

Coach of the Year

June 23 , 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second season in a row, Hobart Head Coach Mike Guerrieri and his Statesmen have swept the Liberty League’s postseason awards. Guerrieri was named the League’s Coach of the Year, while Hobart also received the Crew of the Year and Novice Crew of the Year Awards.

In his third year, Guerrieri guided the Statesmen to another strong year of racing. Winning nearly half of their races this spring, the Statesmen dominated Liberty League opponents at a makeshift regatta at Union College. Hobart won each of the four races after the Liberty League championships were cancelled. Guerrieri also helped guide the varsity four to the silver medal at the New York State Championships and a bronze medal at the IRA Regatta, while the varsity eight and novice eight took home bronze medal honors. Against a very competitive ECAC Championship field, the Statesmen just missed qualifying for the grand final in the varsity eight competition.

The varsity eight of junior Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), senior Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.), sophomore Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), junior Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School (N.H.)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), sophomore Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), senior Matthew Monbouquette (Moses Brown/Burlington, Vt.), sophomore Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), junior J.M. Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), and junior Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.) captured Boat of the Week honors once this spring. The crew won twice and captured bronze medal honors at the New York State Championships.

Chadonic, Gilbert, Grenier, Hoepp, Johnstone-Butcher, and Loring also earned Liberty League Crew of the Year in 2004, while Jameson and Reinheimer were a part of the 2004 Liberty League Novice Crew of the Year.

Hobart’s novice eight of first-years Cary Wasserman (Salisbury School/New York, N.Y.), Alex Tye (Kent School/New Canaan, Conn.), Trippe Duke (Brooks School/Providence, R.I.), Campbell Woods (Williston-Northampton School/Manlius, N.Y.), Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.), Kevin Corbett (Christian Brothers Academy/Manlius, N.Y.), Andrew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.), Vince DeFabo (Latrobe/Latrobe, Pa.), and Mark Vogelgesang (Lassiter/Atlanta, Ga.) placed third in the New York State Championships, besting the eight from Army, and finishing more than eight seconds ahead of the next Division III boat in the final (5th place Ithaca). Hobart’s novice eight did not lose to a Division III boat all season, capturing gold in the Wylie Coyote Chase and the Head of the Fish.
