Statesmen sweep day of racing at Union

April 23 , 2005

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The 2005 Liberty League Crew Championships scheduled for today at St. Lawrence University were cancelled due to poor racing conditions, but that didn’t stop four teams from hitting the water. Hobart, Skidmore, Union, and Vassar packed up and traveled to Union College for a day of racing. The Statesmen dominated the competition, winning each of its four races.

“Despite having to change venues, the Hobart men were able to perform well,” Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said. “They have been showing consistent improvement over the past few weeks which was apparent in their races today. We hope to continue our improvement over the next week in preparation for the New York State Championships.”

Hobart came in one-two in the varsity eight race. The Statesmen’s top boat of Dan Gilbert, Michael Hoepp, Mike Grenier, Gavin Johnstone-Butcher, Joe Jameson, Matt Monbouquette, Rob Reinheimer, JM Chadonic, and Gardner Loring crossed the line first in 5:47.0, while the second varsity eight covered the course in 5:55.0 for the runner-up spot. James Spalt, Tim Faxon, Paul Wasmund, Alex Caruthers, Chip Armstrong, Jarad Desrochers, Steven Reisman, Mike Guglielmo, and Nate Kress manned the second varsity eight for the Statesmen.

The novice eight comprised of Cary Wasserman, Richard Klein, Drew Meunier, Alex Tye, Campbell Woods, Kevin Corbett, Mark Vogelgesang, Vince DeFabo, and Trippe Duke put together a dominating performance, outracing second-place Union by 22 seconds (6:04), while the varsity four boat of Gilbert, Faxon, Wasmund, Caruthers, and Kress was seven seconds faster than the Dutchmen with a time of 6:36.

The most exciting race of the afternoon came from the novice four, as it held off a surging Skidmore boat by one second. Ted Williams, Tim Starr, Steve Reisman, Nick Hoagland, and J. D. Pribor covered the course in 7:40.

Hobart hits the water again on April 30, at the New York State Championships at Whitney Point.
