Hobart crew strikes double gold at Head of the Fish

October 30 , 2004

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew varsity eight and novice eight boats both won their respective events at the <
Head of the Fish this past weekend. The Statesmen’s varsity eight improved on their runner-up performance in 2003, while the novice boat captured its second consecutive win at the Head of the Fish.

The Hobart varsity eight featuring seniors Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Halle/Bedford, N.H.), Matthew Monbouquette (Moses Brown/Burlington, R.I.), juniors Timothy Faxon (Salisbury School/Pelham, Mass.), Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), and Dan Gilbert (Brigton/Rochester, N.Y.), sophomores Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), and Joseph Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.) covered the course in 10:26.65, edging out second place Colgate University (10:27.59) by less than a second.

"The varsity put forth a tremendous effort to secure the win,” said Head Coach Mike Guerrieri. “They had a small collision just before the end of the race, but they recovered quickly and used a final surge to cross the line just in front of Colgate who had beaten us earlier this season.”

The novice eight boat comprised of Cary Wasserman (Salisbury School/New York, N.Y.),Travis Deane (Tabor Academy/Tiverton, R.I.), Trippe Duke (Brooks School/Providence, R.I.), Alex Tye (Kent School/New Canaan, Conn.), Campbell Woods (Williston-Northampton School/Manlius, N.Y.), Timothy Starr (William Penn Charter School/Philadelphia, Pa.), Steven Reisman (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.), Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.), and Andrew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.) turned in a dominating performance, crossing the line in 13:44.8, 25.24 seconds in front of St. Lawrence and the rest of the field.

"The novice men came off of a shaky practice on Friday knowing they had to improve their concentration levels as a team if they were going to perform well on Saturday,” said Guerrieri. “They addressed the issue and put together an impressive last race of the fall season.”

The Hobart varsity four of first-year James Spalt (Tabor Academy/Barnstable, Mass.), sophomores Alex Caruthers (Bishop O’Dowd/Kensington, Calif.), Nathan Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Chip Armstrong (St. Anthony’s/Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), and Jared Desrochers (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.) also finished well. They brought home the silver coming in with a time of 13:54.52, just 2.19 seconds behind top finisher Colgate.

The Hobart second novice also had a strong outing with an eighth place finish in the 30-team field. Improving nine places from the 2003 race with a time of 14:34.04, the Statesmen were the second “B” boat across the line.

The Statesmen will hit the water again on March 26, against Michigan at Cornell.
