Statesmen earn silver medal at Stonehurst
October 9 , 2005
ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team earned a silver medal by finishing second in the men’s collegiate varsity eights at the Stonehurst Capital Invitational this afternoon with a time of 29:32.30. Marietta College took top-honors with a time of 29:17.56.
The veteran boat of senior coxswain Dan Gilbert (Brighton.Rochester, N.Y.), senior stroke John-Michael Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), senior Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), junior Mike Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), senior Tim Faxon (Salisbury School/Pelham, N.Y.), senior Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), junior Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), sophomore Richard Klien (Staples/Westport, Conn.), and sophomore bow Drew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.) improved one place in their overall standings on last year’s finish.
“After a difficult and shaky technical race in the morning, the 1V rallied to produce stellar afternoon results,” Interim Director of Rowing Sandra Chu. “I was impressed by the boat’s ability to assess and correct between racing.”
The cold and rainy conditions impacted the result of the second varsity, which featured junior coxswain Nick Hoagland (Millbrook School/New York, N.Y.), first-year stroke Andrew O’Donnell (Salisbury School/Ancrondale, N.Y.), junior Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Vincent DeFabo (Latrobe/Latrone, Pa.), sophomore Mark Vogelgesang (Lassiter/Altanta, Ga.), first-year Paul Rueggeberg (Kent School/Greenwich, Conn.), sophomore Steve Reisman (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.), sophomore Daniel Allen (Cohasset/Cohasset, Mass.), and sophomore bow Jeffrey Pribor (Morristown-Beard School/Madison, N.J.). Coming off of a very strong morning performance, the crew was kept waiting in the starting chute for over 15 minutes, cooling down after their pre-race warm-up. Equipment failure in the boat also prevented the bow four from hearing the cox call the boat to full pressure as they rowed across the starting line.
“Though they did not have the afternoon sprint race that would have showed their true potential, this boat has gained a tremendous amount of speed over the past two weeks which they should be able to show off in future racing,” Chu said.
The Statesmen return to action on Oct. 23, when they travel to Boston for the Head of the Charles.
