Statesmen crew has strong showing against Marist, Ithacast

April 2 , 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team turned in a strong performance today in its home opener against Marist and Ithaca despite the tough racing conditions. The Statesmen grabbed runner-up honors in three races and captured the top spot in the varsity four event.

Hobart’s varsity eight (senior Michael Hoepp, juniors Gardner Loring, John Michael Chadonic, Timothy Faxon, Gavin Johnstone-Butcher, and Daniel Gilbert, and sophomores Joseph Jameson, Michael Grenier, and Paul Wassmund) crossed the line in second place, covering the course in 6:31.4. Division I Marist finished in 6:19.1, while Ithaca rounded out the competition with a time of 6:50.2.

In the second varsity race, the Statesmen (senior Matthew Monbouquette, sophomores Nathan Kress, Chip Armstrong, Rob Reinheimer, Alex Caruthers, Jared Desrochers, and Mike Guglielmo, and first-years Kevin Corbett and James Spaltonce) again dominated the Bombers, outracing them by 25.3 seconds for its second runner-up finish of the day (7:05.4). Marist grabbed its second of three victories on the day with a time of 6:48.7.

The varsity four race belonged entirely to Hobart (Monbouquette, Reinheimer, Caruthers, sophomore Nathan Kress, and first-year James Spalt), as the Statesmen crossed the line 19 seconds ahead of Marist.

In the most exciting race of the day, the Hobart first-year eight (Spalt, Richard Klein, Trippe Duke, Alex Tye, Campbell Woods, Timothy Starr, Steve Reisman, Vincent DeFabo and Drew Meunier) were only narrowly defeated by Marist’s best first-year offering. Hobart was down early but after a valiant effort to recommit to the race, pulled even with Marist in the final leg of the course. In the last 200 meters, the Statesmen succumbed to the rough water conditions and briefly caught their oars on the starboard side. This gave Marist just enough of an advantage to pull ahead and win by 0.6 seconds.

At a ceremony after the racing, Hobart christened its new Vespoli eight-man shell, naming it after 2004 Olympian Kent Smack ’97. Kent and his wife, Amy WS‘96, were present for the dedication. On the night before racing, Smack spoke to the Colleges' rowers, sharing inspiring words and showing footage of his Athens Olympic rowing events.

Hobart returns to the water on April 16, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Seneca Cup.
