GENEVA, N.Y.—Four student-athletes on the Hobart College crew team recently were named to the 2006 Liberty League Men’s Crew All-Academic team. Junior Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), and sophomores Vincent DeFabo (Latrobe/Latrobe, Pa.), Drew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.) and Jake Podkaminer (Charles D. Dickenson/Trumansburg, N.Y.) represented the Statesmen for their efforts in the classroom and on the water.

To earn a place on the Liberty League All-Academic teams, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore academically.

In the fall, Reinheimer and the varsity eight powered past 23 other squads to capture the annual Head of the Fish Regatta, besting second place Williams by 24 seconds. The media and society major spent the spring semester participating in the international study program in London.

DeFabo and the second varsity eight helped Hobart win the Liberty League Championship in Saratoga Springs on April 29. The Statesmen finished 18 points ahead of the rest of the field to secure their first conference crown. The second varsity eight covered the 2,000 meter course in a time of 6:12.8, six seconds ahead of runner up St. Lawrence.

A member of the current varsity eight, Meunier and his teammates secured 12 points in the team standings with an 11-second win over second place Union. Hobart covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:00.27.. The varsity eight has earned the Liberty League Boat of the Week award four times this season.

Podkaminer and the novice eight posted the widest margin of victory at the conference championships, covering the course in a time of 6:19.8, more than 12 seconds faster than runner-up Hamilton. In the fall, the novice eight also claimed the Wylie Coyote Chase title, more than 37 seconds ahead of the next boat.

Hobart is back on the water on May 6-7, when the Statesmen compete in the 2006 New York State Championships at Whitney Point.
