SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Hobart crew team captured its first Liberty League Rowing Championship on Fish Creek this afternoon. The Statesmen completed the day's racing with 30 points, more than double the points totals of Hamilton, St. Lawrence, and Union that finished tied for second with 12 points.

Hobart went into the regatta hoping to win three out of four races, but the Statesmen instead won all four races to wrestle the championship from 2004 champion, Rensselaer.

The varsity eight of Dan Gilbert, Gardner Loring, JM Chadonic, Tim Faxon, Mike Grenier, Sep Levatich, Alex Tye, Richard Klein, and Drew Meunier secured 12 points with an 11-second win over second place Union. The Statesmen covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:00.27.

The novice eight posted a winning time of 6:19.8. Mike Talarico, Andrew O'Donnell, John Heavey, Chris Moore, Jake Podkaminer, Ben Ramsey, Garrett McIntyre, Matt Gruppo, and Dan Allen enjoyed the widest margin of victory of the day, finishing more than 12 seconds in front of Hamilton.

Hobart's second varsity eight of Mario Sola, Paul Wasmund, Joe Jameson, Alex Caruthers, Mark Vogelgesang, Mike Guglielmo, Nate Kress, Vince DeFabo, and JD Pribor earned a six-second victory over St. Lawrence, crossing the line in 6:12.8.

In the afternoon's tightest race, the Statesmen novice four of Sola, Scott Baroody, Andrew Lawrence, Alex Henry, and Alex Kahn slipped across the line 1.59 seconds in front of Vassar, posting a time of 7:20.8.

Hobart is back on the water May 6-7 in the New York State Championships in Whitney Point.
