Hobart dominates inaugural Challenge
October 14, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew dominated the inaugural HWS Challenge on the Canal, winning all four of the events it entered. The Statesmen captured the varsity 8+, the varsity 4+, the second varsity 8+, and the novice 8+ races.
"The results speak for themselves as to how the men competed today," Hobart Head Coach Mike Alton said. "We mastered our course and the conditions in each event."
In the varsity 8+ race, the Statesmen boat of Alex Caruthers, Mike Grenier, Joe Jameson, Richard Klien, Nate Kress, Sep Levatich, Rob Reinheimer, Mike Talarico, and Paul Wasmund put nearly a minute between themselves and their nearest competitors. Hobart posted a winning time of 14:55, followed by St. Lawrence (15:51) and Hamilton (15:58).
"The varsity eight used the day to fine tune their race plan for the Head of the Charles next week where we will face some great competition," Alton said.
The Statesmen varsity 4+ posted an 80-second victory the Continentals. Grenier, Levatich, Reinheimer, Talarico, and Wasmund crossed the line in 16:28. Hamilton was second in 17:48.
Dan Allen, Chip Armstrong, Ben Draper, John Heavey, Nick Hoagland, Chris Moore, Andrew O’Donnell, Ben Ramsey, and Mark Vogelgesang won the second varsity 8+ race. The Statesmen were 20 seconds in front of St. Lawrence, posting a winning time of 15:45.
The Hobart novice 8+ of William Bearse, Matthew Bruen, Francis Craig, Benjamin D'Innocenzo, Harrison Goldberg, Richard Mable, Kenny Rodden, Matthew Scanlon, and Steven Valchuis won in 15:48, crossing the line 13 seconds ahead of the runners up from Ithaca.
In the only race Hobart didn’t win (or enter), St. Lawrence defeated Hamilton in the novice 4+.
"We ran a pretty good regatta today and hope to add a few more schools to the list of competition for next year," Alton said.
