Hobart retains Statesmen Cup in racing at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart varsity eight retained the Statesmen Cup with a win over Ithaca this morning, during a successful day of racing. The Cup was inaugurated in 1996.

The varsity eight of Dan Gilbert, Alex Tye, Gardner Loring, JM Chadonic, Joe Jameson, Mike Grenier, Joe Levatich, Paul Wasmund, and Tim Faxon defeated the Bombers by 2.2 seconds with a time of 6:20.2 to advance to the grand final. In the afternoon's racing, Hobart shaved nearly five seconds off its morning time, placing third behind the Cornell lightweights and Marist.


The Statesmen second varsity eight of Mario Sola, Richard Klien, Mark Vogelgesang, Mike Gugliemo, Drew Meunier, Tim Starr, Alex Caruthers, JD Pribor, and Nate Kress turned in a second place showing in the morning, trailing the Cornell lightweights, but outdistancing UMass. In the afternoon's petite final, they once again bested the Minutemen, and were just 2.6 seconds behind Ohio State with a time of 6:28.1.

The Hobart novice eight also earned a spot in the grand finals with a win over Ithaca in the morning. Mike Talarico, Andrew O'Donnell, Jake Podkaminer, Chris Moore, Aaron Matyac, Ben Ramsey, Garrett McIntyre, Matt Gruppo, and Dan Allen covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:30.9, nearly six seconds ahead of the Bombers. In the grand final, the Statesmen were third behind the Cornell lightweights and Marist.

The second novice eight of Mike Talarico, Alex Kahn, Andrew Lawrence, Vince DeFabio, Garrett McIntyre, Scott Baroody, Andy Wickenden, Alex Henry, and Ted Williams used a hard charge over the final 400 meters to slip past Ohio State in the grand finals to finish second overall. Hobart turned in a time of 7:02.8, 3.2 seconds ahead of the Buckeyes.

The Statesmen are back in action April 8-9 in the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J.
