Statesmen power past Yellowjackets, Red Hawks
March 25, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart crew team opened its spring season with a four-race sweep of Rochester and Rensselaer on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal this morning.
The varsity eight proved to be the most exciting race of the day. The Yellowjackets hung with the Statesmen, leading the first half of the race, and forcing the home team to sweat out a six-second win. Dan Gilbert, Alex Tye, Alex Caruthers, JM Chadonic, Joe Jameson, Mike Grenier, Tim Faxon, Richard Klein, and Drew Meunier posted a winning time of 6:18.88. Rochester crossed the line in 6:24.83 followed by Rensselaer, 6:44.34.
Hobart’s second varsity eight of Mike Talarico, Richard Klein, Mark Vogelgesang, Andrew O’Donnell, Sep Levatich, Tim Starr, Alex Caruthers, Vince DeFabio, and JD Pribor pulled the 2,000-meter course in 6:39.63, more than 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up Yellowjackets.
In the novice eight race, the Statesmen won by more than 16 seconds over Rochester. Mario Sola, O’Donnell, John Heavey, Chris Moore, Jake Podkaminer, Ben Ramsey, Aaron Matyac, Matt Gruppo, and Dan Allen recorded a winning time of 6:46.14.
Hobart’s second novice eight notched the widest margin of victory. Sola, Alex Kahn, Andrew Lawrence, Matt Gruppo, Garrett McIntyre, Scott Baroody, Andy Widkenden, Alex Henry, and Ted Williams raced home in 7:42.32. Rensselaer placed second more than 39 seconds later.
The Statesmen will be back on the water on April 1, when they travel to Ithaca to face the Bombers and the Marist Red Foxes. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
