Statesmen battle heavyweights in ECAC Rowing Grand Final

May 14, 2006

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Hobart crew team competed in the ECAC Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond this weekend. The Statesmen varsity eight finished sixth in a grand final that included four Division I programs.

The varsity eight of Dan Gilbert, Gardner Loring, JM Chadonic, Tim Faxon, Mike Grenier, Sep Levatich, Alex Tye, Richard Klein, and Drew Meunier sped through its opening heat in 5:59.354, second only to the University of Virginia. In Sunday morning's semifinals, the Statesmen beat out Colgate, UC Davis and Wesleyan for third place and the final spot in the grand final. Hobart's final 2,000-meter time of the weekend, 6:01.203, placed the boat sixth in the heat and in the overall varsity eight standings.

In the second varsity eight event, Mario Sola, Paul Wasmund, Joe Jameson, Alex Caruthers, Mark Vogelgesang, Mike Guglielmo, Rob Reinheimer, Vince DeFabio, and Nate Kress finished fifth in the petite final (11th overall). They covered the course in 6:19.021, edging UMass by just four tenths of a second.

Hobart will celebrate Monday morning. The four Statesmen seniors (Chadonic, Faxon, Gilbert, Loring) will graduate in a mini-commencement ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Chapel. The quartet missed the College's 181st commencement exercises on Sunday.

Hobart's final competition of the season, the IRA Championships, is June 1-3 in Camden, N.J.
