CAMDEN, N.J.—The Hobart crew team competed in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on the Cooper River, May 31-June 2. The Statesmen varsity four with coxswain reached the grand final, finishing sixth, while the varsity pair earned a spot in the petite final, turning in an eighth place finish.
One of only three Division III schools to earn a spot in the 24 boat field, Hobart’s varsity four—senior Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), senior JM Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), junior Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), junior Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), and senior coxswain Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.)—placed third in 6:41.74 in its opening heat, trailing Stanford and Colgate, but besting Oregon State, Minnesota, and Cornell.
In their repechage, the Statesmen finished second to Temple, but well ahead of Western Washington and Syracuse universities to advance to the second semifinal. They covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:39.23.
In Hobart’s semifinal, the four crossed the finish line third (in 6:40.50) to earn a spot in the grand final. In the final, the Statesmen placed sixth in a time of 6:39.22. Fellow Division III entries from RIT and MIT finished 14th and 17th, respectively.
Loring, Chadonic, and Gilbert competed in the IRA grand final in each of the past four years. They won the freshman four in 2002, placed fifth as sophomores, and won the bronze last season.
The varsity pair—junior Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.) and senior Tim Faxon (Salisbury School/Pelham, N.Y.)—was also one of only three Division III entries out of 19 boats. The winner of each of the three opening day heats and the winner of each of the three repechages advanced to the grand final.
Hobart finished fourth in 7:11.20 in its heat, sending the Statesmen to the repechages. The pair trailed only Wisconsin in its second race of the weekend, squeaking across the line just ahead of Navy. Hobart’s time of 7:00.36 was just 4.2 tenths of a second better than the Midshipmen.
In the petite final, Navy exacted revenge nosing across the line just 1.21 seconds ahead of the Statesmen (7:07.59). Hobart again proved to be the top Division III entry, besting Rochester (9th) and MIT (19th).
