Hobart novice 8 honored by Liberty League

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team’s novice eight was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week this afternoon. On Saturday, the Statesmen won a gold medal at the New York State Rowing Championships on Whitney Point Lake.
Hobart pulled away from second-place Ithaca for a 7.3-second victory. First-years Harrison Goldberg (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Steven Valchuis (Brooks School/North Andover, Mass.), Carmen Cimini (Newport Harbor/Newport Beach, Calif.), Matthew Scanlon (McQuaid/Fairport, N.Y.), Chris Jenco (Naperville North/Naperville, Ill.), William Bearse (Bridgton Academy/North Bridgton, Maine), Andrew Fosbrook (Queensbury/Queensbury, N.Y.), Francis Craig (Walt Whitman/Bethesda, Md.), and Richard Mable (Pomfret School/Pomfret, Conn.) covered the 2,000-meter course in a winning time of 6 minutes, 21.4 seconds. Army was third followed by Marist, Binghamton, Albany, and Rensselaer.

It’s the first gold medal at the state championships for Hobart since the varsity four was triumphant in 2003.
As a team, the Statesmen have earned 11 of the past 12 Liberty League Boat of the Week awards.
Hobart is back on the water of Whitney Point Lake on May 12-13 in the ECAC Rowing Championships.
