Hobart retains Statesmen Cup

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart crew team defeated Ithaca to successfully defend the Statesmen Cup in a successful day of racing. The Hobart varsity eight and the second varsity eight finished third in the grand final, while the novice eight won the petite final.

"As a team we learned some things this weekend and are moving in the right direction to get faster as the season progresses," Head Coach Mike Alton said. "Overall, I'm very pleased with where we're at right now as a team."

The varsity eight of Cary Wasserman, Richard Klein, Sep Levatich, Mike Grenier, Joe Jameson, Paul Wasmund, Rob Reinheimer, Alex Caruthers, and Drew Meunier won its morning heat against the Bombers, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:35.9. Ithaca was more than eight seconds behind.

Hobart finished third in the grand final behind first place Trinity (Conn.) and the Cornell lightweights. The Statesmen improved on their morning time, crossing the line in 6:34.0.

In the second varsity eight heats, Hobart again outdueled Ithaca. Nick Hoagland, Andrew O'Donnell, Nate Kress, Ben Ramsey, John Heavey, Vince Defabo, Dan Allen, Matt Gruppo, and Alex Kahn brought the Statesmen home three seconds ahead of the Bombers in 6:47.5.

The grand final saw Hobart (7:16.4) finish behind the Cornell lightweights (6:26.6) and Trinity (6:27.7).

The Statesmen novice eight of Harrison Goldberg, Matthew Scanlon, Carmen Cimini, Richard Mable, William Bearse, Andrew Fosbrook, Chris Jenco, Steven Valchuis, and Francis Craig second in their heat with a time of 6:53.6, behind the Cornell lightweights (6:49.5).

In the petite final, Hobart left Massachusetts and Marist in its wake, posting a winning time of 7:00.1, more than 28 seconds ahead of the runner-up Minutemen.

The Statesmen are back on the water on April 7, when they host Grand Valley State on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal.
