Mother Nature prevails at ECAC Championships

May 13 , 2007

ECAC LogoWHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—High winds forced the cancellation of the majority of racing at the 2007 ECAC Rowing Championships on Whitney Point Lake.

The Hobart varsity eight finished second in its opening heat on Saturday. The Statesmen covered the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 55.084 seconds, trailing only heat winner Virginia (5:49.409). The result put the crew into the semifinals.

On Sunday morning, Hobart finished third in a thrilling finish that saw the top three boats cross the line with less than a second separating first place from third. Michigan was the winning team in 5:53.357, followed by Marist (5:54.099) and the Statesmen (5:54.274). That finish would have sent Hobart into the grand final if the wind hadn't intervened.

The Statesmen got just one other boat on the water before racing was called off, the novice eight. Hobart won its heat to merit a spot in the grand final. The Statesmen crossed the finish line in 6:06.908, registering an open water victory over the runner-up Wolverines.

Hobart's next event is graduation. The team's eight seniors, who missed commencement exercises today, will receive their degrees in a special commencement at 10:30 a.m. on May 14 in St. John's Chapel.

The Statesmen will close out their racing season, May 31 through June 2, in the IRA Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J.
