May 2 , 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team saw five of its members honored at the 42nd Annual Block H Awards Banquet April 30, where the Statesmen Athletic Association and the Hobart Athletics Department honored the top student-athletes of 2006-07. Junior Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.), sophomore Ben Ramsey (Carnegie Vanguard/Houston, Texas), senior Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), senior Nate Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), and first-year Matthew Scanlon (McQuaid Jesuit/Fairport, N.Y.) all received awards.
Klein was honored as the most valuable rower with the S. Ford Weiskittel Crew Award. He led the Statesmen to their second consecutive Liberty League title this spring, and 13 league Boat of the Week awards, as the stroke for the varsity eight.
The Most Improved Rower Award was given to Ramsey, while the Rookie Award went to Scanlon. The stroke for the crew team’s varsity four, Ramsey led the Statesmen to a first-place finish at the Knecht Cup and the Liberty League Championships, and filled in when needed for the varsity eight, while Scanlon has been a key member of the novice eight all season.
Wasmund and Kress shared the Charles “Chip” Hart ’90 Award. This award is presented to oarsmen who demonstrate determination and commitment, and have been inspirational to the team. Wasmund has helped power the varsity eight to five first-place finishes this season, while Kress has helped the varsity four to four victories.
The Statesmen will continue their season on May 5-6 at Whitney Point, N.Y., for the New York State Championships. Racing begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
