Statesmen rowers compete for Seneca Cup

April 21, 2007

HAMILTON, N.Y.—The Hobart crew team competed in the annual Seneca Cup races with Division I Colgate University today. The Raiders retained the cup with a 1.8 second victory over the Statesmen varsity eight.

Racing on a shortened 1,500-meter course, the Hobart varsity eight was carrying a lot of speed as the teams crossed the finish line. The Statesmen were just three-quarters of a boat length behind Colgate. Cary Wasserman, Richard Klein, Sep Levatich, Mike Grenier, Joe Jameson, Paul Wasmund, Rob Reinheimer, Alex Caruthers, and Drew Meunier powered the Hobart eight to the line in 4:30.4.

The Statesmen led early in the second varsity eight race, but a steering issue turned the lead over to the Raiders, an advantage they never relinquished. Hobart, powered by Harrison Goldberg, Andrew O'Donnell, Carmen Cimini, Matthew Scanlon, Francis Craig, Ben Ramsey, John Heavey, Richard Mable, and Nate Kress, covered the course in 4:46.4, five seconds behind Colgate.

The Statesmen are back on the water on April 28, when they will attempt to defend their Liberty League Championship in Canton.
