Hobart found its toughest competition in the stiff head current on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal on Saturday, gliding home in a winning time of 6:54.2, more than 26 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Hobart’s second varsity eight. The Red Hawks were a distant third, covering the 2-kilometer course in 7:42.3.
The Statesmen varsity eight was powered by sophomore Cary Wasserman (Salisbury School/Salisbury, Conn.), sophomore Ben Ramsey (Carnegie Vanguard/Houston, Texas), senior Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), senior Mike Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), senior Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), senior Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), senior Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), junior Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.), and junior Drew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.).
Hobart has won nine consecutive Liberty League Boat of the Week awards, dating back to the spring season of 2006.
The Statesmen are back in action on March 31, when they travel to Ithaca. The team will battle the Bombers as well as Trinity (Conn.), and Division I boats from Marist, Massachusetts, and Ohio State.
