GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart crew team christened the Wendy J. Kalif and then rowed the team's new shell to victory over Renselaer on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal in the spring opener for the Statesmen.
The varsity 8+ of Cary Wasserman, Ben Ramsey, Sep Levatich, Mike Grenier, Joe Jameson, Paul Wasmund, Rob Reinheimer, Richard Klein, and Drew Meunier found its toughest competition in the stiff current, glidding home in a winning time of 6:54.2, more than 26 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Hobart's second varsity 8+. Rensselaer was a distance third, covering the 2-kilometer course in 7:42.3.
The Statesmen novice 8+ of Harrison Goldberg, Matthew Scanlon, Francis Craig, Richard Mable, William Bearse, Andrew Fosbrook, Chris Jenco, Steven Valchuis, and Carmen Cimini topped RPI's fastest boat by nearly a minute. Hobart logged a time of 7:13.1, while the Red Hawks crossed the line in 8:09.4.
The Statesmen are back on the water on March 31, when they travel to Ithaca for a day of racing.
