Statesmen sweep Liberty League rowing awards

May 25 , 2007

Liberty League logoGENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team claimed all three 2007 Liberty League postseason awards. Head Coach Mike Alton and his staff earned their second straight Coaching Staff of the Year award, while the Statesmen varsity eight and novice eight were voted the Crew of the Year and the Novice Crew of the Year, respectively.

Alton guided the Statesmen to their second consecutive Liberty League Championship, as Hobart won three of the four events it entered. The Statesmen won the League championship in the varsity eight, the varsity four, and the novice four, and finished second in the junior varsity eight. Hobart went on to win three medals (1 gold, 2 silver) at the New York State Championships the following weekend. Alton’s squad garnered 11 (out of 12) Liberty League Boat of Week awards this season, including nine straight to start the season. Alton is assisted by Michael Hoepp ’05 and Ford Weiskittel.

The varsity eight won the Liberty League Championship for the third consecutive time. The Statesmen enjoyed a 17-second victory over runner-up Union. The following weekend, Hobart won a silver medal at the New York State Championships. Division I Marist was the only crew to finish ahead of the Statesmen. Sophomore Cary Wasserman (Salisbury School/Taconic, Conn.), junior Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.), senior Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), senior Mike Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), senior Joe Jameson (Bishop Brebeuf/Indianapolis, Ind.), senior Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), senior Rob Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), senior Alex Caruthers (Bishop O’Dowd/Kensington, Calif.), and junior Drew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.) won eight Liberty League Boat of the Week Awards this season, including each of the first four.

The only novice crew to earn the Liberty League Boat of the Week award, the Statesmen laid claim to the honor following a victory in the Syracuse Invitational in November and again in May following the boat’s gold medal-winning effort at the New York State Championships. The only boat in the conference to win Boat of the Week honors more than the Statesmen novice eight was Hobart’s varsity eight. Of their eight races this season, the Statesmen won six and finished second in the seventh. First-years Harrison Goldberg (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Steven Valchuis (Brooks School/North Andover, Mass.), Carmen Cimini (Newport Harbor/Newport Beach, Calif.), Matthew Scanlon (McQuaid/Fairport, N.Y.), Chris Jenco (Naperville North/Naperville, Ill.), William Bearse (Bridgton Academy/North Bridgton, Maine), Andrew Fosbrook (Queensbury/Queensbury, N.Y.), Francis Craig (Walt Whitman/Bethesda, Md.), and Richard Mable (Pomfret School/Pomfret, Conn.) powered Hobart’s novice eight.

The Statesmen will conclude their season May 31 through June 2 in Cherry Hill, N.J., in the 2007 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. Hobart will compete in the freshmen eight, the varsity four with coxswain and the varsity four without coxswain. The Statesmen are the only Division III entry in the freshman eight and the varsity four without.
