GENEVA, N.Y.—Recently returned from a spring break training trip to Gainesville, Ga., the Hobart College crew team is set to begin its 2007 season on March 24. The Statesmen will have the advantage of their home waters, the Seneca-Cayuga Canal, when they host Rochester and Rensselaer at 10 a.m.
“Coach Hoepp and I are looking forward to the start of the spring racing season,” said Head Coach Mike Alton. “We’re excited to see where we are at this point in the season, and we feel we have the making of a strong team based on our indoor training.”
Hobart returns 21 rowers from last year’s squad that won the Liberty League title for the first time in program history. Seniors Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.) and Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), and juniors Richard Klein (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and Andrew Meunier (Shenendehowa/Round Lake, N.Y.) return to lead the Statesmen’s varsity eight after handily winning the event at the 2006 league championships with a time of 6:00.27.
The novice eight, second varsity eight, and novice four also registered first-place finishes at the championships last spring. Returning from the second varsity eight are seniors Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), Alex Caruthers (Bishop O’Dowd/Kensington, Calif.), Nate Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), and Vince DeFabo (Latrobe/Latrobe, Pa.), and from the victorious novice eight, sophomores Mike Talarico (Falmouth/Falmouth, Maine), Andrew O’Donnell (Salisbury School/Ancrondale, N.Y.), John Heavey (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Ben Ramsey (Carnegie Vanguard/Houston, Texas), Matt Gruppo (Fairfield/Fairfield, Conn.), and Dan Allen (Cohasset/Cohasset, Mass.) all return.
Last spring the Statesmen went on to take second place in the New York State Championships, finishing 10 points behind Division I Army, and earned two spots in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Hobart’s varsity four finished sixth out of 22, and its varsity pair took eighth of 18 boats.
After a strong showing in the fall, the Statesmen are ready to continue their success this spring. Hobart won its own Challenge on the Canal, as well as the Head of the Fish Regatta, and took seventh at the Head of the Charles.
