Fall season comes to a close for Hobart crew

October 27, 2003

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Hobart College crew team’s fall season came to a finale last weekend at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Statesmen turned in a good performance in the varsity 8+, grabbing the runner-up spot behind Williams with a time of 11:36. The novice eight captured gold easily, outdistancing runner-up St. Lawrence by 17 seconds.

Edging RIT out by six seconds for second place of 41 teams, the Statesmen’s varsity boat was led from cox to bow by seniors Sarah Roberts (Burnt Hills Ballston Lake/Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Havilland Campbell (LaSalle/Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Matthew Monbouquette (Moses Brown/Warwick, R.I.), sophomores Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.) and John Michael Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), senior Andrew Webb (Jeb Stuart/Falls Church, Va.), and sophomores Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Timothy Faxon (Salsbury/Pelham, N.Y.).

The novice eight turned in a stellar performance on the day, capturing first and 16th of 33 boats. The winning boat was manned by Nick Hoagland (Millbrook School/New York, N.Y.), Ben Draper (The Branson School/San Anselmo, Calif.), Nathan Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Brooktondale, N.Y.), Jared Desrochers (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.), Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), Rob Reinheiner (Chererus/Bowdoinham, Maine).

"This wraps up a strong fall for Hobart,” said Head Coach Mike Guerrieri. “We defeated some tough Ivy League and Division I caliber crews this year at the Stonehurst and the Head of the Charles. The first-year’s win at the Fish shows we also have some depth to work with."
